Underground Worlds: Centering Sound in Art
Join us for a free evening of electronic music, dialogue, and performance organized and moderated by the Armory's Getty Marrow Undergraduate Interns Han Kim and Tania Ordonez. Why is electronic music often excluded and undervalued as a serious art form? Underground Worlds aims to share musicians' insights, foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of electronic music as an art form, and transform its perception and value within the broader art community. Panelists include Pacoima Techno, Maral, and Santiago Salazar. After the panel, enjoy live sets by Pacoima Techno and Maral, followed by DJ sets from Santiago Salazar and special guest Langosta. This event is free and open to everyone. RSVPs are appreciated but not required.
About the Panelists
Pacoima Techno is an LA-based artist. They use their experience growing up in the San Fernando Valley as the basis for their music, live performance, and fashion. In addition to creating sultry, hard-edged dance music, Pacoima Techno is invested in drag and the subtleties of the term, as well as how we are all in drag.
Maral’s sonic palette incorporates a collage of Iranian Classical & Folk samples and explores genres of experimental electronic production such as noise, punk/post-punk, and dub. Maral has released two critically acclaimed records, Ground Groove (2022) and Push (2020), on Leaving Records. She has collaborated with artists such as Lee "Scratch" Perry, Panda Bear, Penny Rimbaud of Crass, Anika, and more.
Santiago Salazar, also known as DJ S², began his DJ career in 1992, inspired by mix tapes from the Los Angeles underground scene. He later joined the esteemed Underground Resistance in Detroit, releasing music under the UR label and touring globally at prestigious venues like Liquid Room (Tokyo), Berghain (Berlin), Rex Club (Paris), and Fabric (London). In 2006, Santiago returned to Los Angeles, left UR, and co-founded Ican Productions with Esteban Adame. Their releases have been charted by Jeff Mills and Laurent Garnier. Santiago has also released music on labels such as Rush Hour, Finest Blend Recordings, Wallshaker Music, and Berlin’s Macro Recordings. In 2008, he co-founded the label Historia y Violencia with Silent Servant, and in 2013, he launched Major People. An underground legend, Santiago continues to produce and DJ, residing in Los Angeles.
