Community Tapestry

Community Tapestry

The community tapestry uses the traditional Japanese Itajime Shibori dye technique with natural dyes and flora to reflect the nature, people, relationships, and places that unify Altadena and Pasadena. Each dyed fabric piece will be sewn together and displayed in the Mezzanine gallery for Going Up the Hill: A Community Art Experience. Join Joe Bruns and Tracy Nakayama, Armory Teaching Artists, for this workshop.

The event is free to attend and RSVP is required.

About Tracy Nakayama, Armory Teaching Artist
Tracy Nakayama contributes across all the departments at the Armory: Studio, Schools, Off-site Community, and Field Trips. With an MFA from The School of Visual Arts, her work has been exhibited internationally and is in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art.  Born and raised in Hawaii, she’s been called a “plant whisperer” and is currently our in-house Botanist. She enjoys teaching drawing and printmaking. Some of her memorable classes are: "Drawing As Meditation", "Ikebana for Artists", and "Handmade Houses".

About Joe Bruns Armory Teaching Artist
JT Bruns is a queer artist, designer, and educator. He earned a BFA focusing on Sculpture and Printmaking and later attended Peck School of the Arts to become a licensed Art Educator. Simultaneously, he was invited to spend a year as an artist in residence at a Middle & High School that was created by educators on behalf of students identifying as LGBTQIA+ who were not succeeding in traditional school settings within Milwaukee Public Schools. In addition to his studio art practice, Bruns works as a teaching artist throughout PUSD and LAUSD schools. He is the organizer of the queer book and zine collective Lost & Found, which exhibits regularly at MOCA for the Printed Matter fair. He is also the designer and maker responsible for Soft Daddy, a genderqueer brand focused on visibility, body inclusivity, and equity through leather and vegan wearables.
