Exhibitions

This exhibition brings together assemblage sculpture, photography, archival materials, and a recreation of the Moody's mobile N.O.M.A.D. (Narrative, Odyssey, Manifesting, Artistic, Dreams) to consider home as something built, carried, and continually remade. Working with salvaged wood, glass, metal, and found objects, Moody assembles materials that hold memory, movement, and the lived experiences of migration, displacement, and belonging.

Presented during the centennial of Route 66, the exhibition looks beyond the mythology of the "Mother Road" to consider the histories that continue to shape mobility across the American West. Drawing on the legacy of Black assemblage in Los Angeles and artists such as John Outterbridge, Moody's work transforms everyday materials into vessels of personal and collective memory, asking what we carry with us and what remains after we leave home. About the Artist

Dominique Moody (b. 1956, Augsburg, Germany) received a BA from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1991. Her work has been exhibited at the California African American Museum, Los Angeles (2020, 2019, 2016, 2009, 2008, 2003); Watts Towers Arts Center, Los Angeles (2011, 2012, 2009, 1999, 1996); National Museum of Mexican Art, Chicago (2008); Craft and Folk Art Museum, Los Angeles (2006); Skirball Cultural Center, Los Angeles (2004); and Japanese American National Museum, Los Angeles (2003). She has received grants from the Finding Family Stories Project (2001) and California Community Foundation (2001), among others. Through her mobile artwork N.O.M.A.D., she has created several artist-in-residence projects, including those at Side Street Projects in Pasadena (2018); a Prospect.4 satellite at Xavier University, New Orleans (2017); and Harrison House Music Arts Ecology, Joshua Tree, California (2016).

Artist Walkthrough with Dominique Moody

Join artist Dominique Moody for an intimate walkthrough of her exhibition at the Armory. Moody will share insights into the works on view, the evolution of N.O.M.A.D., and the experiences and ideas around home, migration, displacement, memory, and place that have shaped her practice. The walkthrough will consider how we build and rebuild a sense of home, and the objects, stories, and memories we carry with us through periods of change and displacement.

Shoebox Workshop with Dominique Moody

Inspired by Dominique Moody’s practice of transforming found and everyday materials into vessels for memory and storytelling, participants will create their own shoebox-scale constructions exploring ideas of home, place, and personal history. Led by Moody alongside an Armory teaching artist, the workshop invites participants to consider how ordinary objects and materials can carry stories and become sites for imagination and reflection. In Conversation: Dominique Moody and Lynell George

To mark the closing of the exhibition, artist Dominique Moody joins writer and journalist Lynell George for a conversation reflecting on Moody’s practice and the histories, memories, and experiences that inform her work. Their conversation will consider themes of home, migration, displacement, movement, and place, as well as Moody’s decades-long development of N.O.M.A.D. as both an artwork and an evolving way of living and making. Together, they will consider how experiences of displacement and change shape our understanding of home, and how memory, storytelling, and creative practice can help preserve and rebuild connections to place and community.
