Firing Requirements and Studio Policies
To help us care for the kilns and everyone’s artwork, we ask that all work be prepared for safe firing.
• Artwork should be completely dry before drop-off.
• Thick or solid pieces must be properly hollowed to allow moisture and gases to escape during firing.
• All work must be made from clay and finished with materials compatible with our firing range of up to cone 5.
• Armatures, glue, and other unapproved non-clay materials may not be incorporated into the clay.
• All glaze must be fully wiped from the bottom of each piece and any surface that will contact the kiln shelf. In some cases, we may ask that you provide kiln cookies to help protect the kiln shelves from glaze drips.
• Clay bodies and glazes must be clearly identified. We may request photos of the clay body, glaze containers, and/or product labels to help confirm firing compatibility.
• All artwork is subject to review and approval by the Studio team before drop-off. The Armory reserves the right to decline work that may pose a risk to the kiln, kiln shelves, or other artwork.
• Ceramic firing involves heat, material changes, and unavoidable uncertainties. Pieces may crack, warp, or break, and glazes may produce unexpected results. While the Studio team will take reasonable care when handling and firing approved work, individual results cannot be guaranteed.
