Itajime Shibori Dyeing Workshop with Tracy Nakayama

Experience a one-day, hands-on Itajime Shibori Dyeing workshop with Armory Teaching Artist Tracy Nakayama for the closing weekend of From the Ground Up: Nurturing Diversity in Hostile Environments. Learn the art of the traditional Japanese tie-dye technique of “board-clamping” folded fabric between wooden boards and dyeing it in rich indigo. The 2-hour workshop covers the technique of Itajime shibori, the art of indigo dyeing, and how to care for your finished textile. All materials will be provided for the workshop. You are welcome to bring natural fiber fabrics or garments to dye as well!
Tracy Nakayama contributes across all the departments at the Armory; Studio, Schools, Off-site Community, and Field Trips. With an MFA from The School of Visual Arts, her work has been exhibited internationally and is in the Museum of Modern Art collection. Born and raised in Hawaii, she’s been called a “plant whisperer” and is currently our in-house Botanist. She enjoys teaching drawing and printmaking. Some of her memorable classes are: "Drawing As Meditation," "Ikebana for Artists," and "Handmade Houses."
The event is free to attend. RSVP required.
