2019 Events

Enjoy a free evening of art and entertainment as the city’s cultural institutions swing open their doors for ArtNight Pasadena. Make the Armory your hub location, then hop on free shuttle buses connecting dozens of other cultural destinations in town. In addition to our current exhibitions and special musical guests, there will be drop-in art making experiences for everyone, including life drawing with Teaching Artist Andrew K. Currey (7:00 to 9:00 PM), observational botanical drawing with Armory education team members (6:00 to 8:00 PM), and an interactive fragrance design workshop with FIDM instructor Andre' Barnwell (6:00 to 10:00 PM). Don't miss our annual display of teen art work in our Community Room. You can also enjoy $5 draught beer, courtesy of Pasadena's Craftsman Brewing Company, plus gourmet Indian street food from India Jones Chow Truck.

After you visit the Armory, be sure to take an ArtNight shuttle bus to artWORKS, our satellite facility in East Pasadena, for an interactive evening with hands-on, family-friendly arts workshops alongside musical entertainment.

Sara Kathryn Arledge: Serene for the Moment
In this exhibition, abstraction is an entry point to consider daily encounters marked by abundance, loss, transcendence, and a dream-like passage of time. An under-recognized painter and innovator of mid-20th century experimental cinema, Sara Kathryn Arledge (1911-1998) was a prolific artist who emphasized the eerie in the mundane and the disorienting in the beautiful.

Sandra de la Loza: Mi Casa Es Su Casa
In Mi Casa Es Su Casa, Sandra de la Loza interrogates historic photographs of her own Mexican American family to address issues of power, memory, and history through the concept of home. By obscuring, blurring, and replacing the bodies and faces in the photographs, she points to the codes that comprise the family photo—the landscape, architecture, pose, and fashion to investigate the uneasy and slippery terrain of representation itself.

Live On Our Main Stage

El Rio
El Rio is a Los Angeles sextet expressing resistance, love, and revolution through a fusion of Latin American folk rhythms. Backed by an array of woodwinds, percussion, acoustic, and electric instruments, the vocal melodies and spoken poetry provoke a spirited, visceral dance that brings to life images of the natural landscapes of the Los Angeles river, the highlands split by the arroyo Seco and the red tailed hawks that fly above the city. El Rio aims to inspire thought and social evolution through music. El Rio forever stands in solidarity with communities fighting and resisting oppression worldwide. Boom: Armory Art High Exhibition
BOOM is a showcase of the energetic, thoughtful and unapologetic work from the Armory’s Art High program. This exhibition highlights the talents of teens who share a common interest in art and are working side-by-side with Armory Teaching Artists to learn and further their skills in painting, drawing, ceramics, silk screening, street art, photography, video production, sound engineering, graphic design, animation, and more. Art High programs are taught in a range of creative environments from neighborhood teen centers, probation camps, and the Armory Studio.
