Installations Inside/Out 20th Anniversary Exhibition
The Armory’s 20th anniversary exhibition, Installations Inside/Out, was a celebration of the Armory Gallery’s long-standing goal of supporting contemporary Southern California artists, as well as the Gallery’s determination to bring art to the public in outdoor, nontraditional locations.
For the exhibition, the Armory commissioned 20 contemporary artists, all having previously created art for the organization, to make new site-specific works, installations, and/or performances both inside the Armory or at sites throughout Pasadena. Artists include Kim Abeles, Edgar Arceneaux, Deborah Aschheim, Daniel Buren, Carl Cheng, Seth Kaufman, Barry McGee, Michael C. McMillen, Carlos Mollura, Matthew Moore, Jane Mulfinger, Bruce Nauman, Rudy Perez, Sarah Perry, Ed Ruscha, Betye Saar, Barbara T. Smith, John Trevino, Pae White, and Mario Ybarra Jr.
There is a limited edition catalogue that documents all 20 installations from the show, including Bruce Nauman’s ephemeral Untitled, 1969/2009 (LEAVE THE LAND ALONE) skywriting performance. Fashioned as an artist’s book rather than a traditional catalogue, this is the most unique publication ever produced by the Armory. Printed on distinctive papers with multiple fold-outs, the catalogue also contains samples of materials used by some of the artists in their installations, including a hand-cut section of a flag like those used in Daniel Buren’s A Rainbow in the Sky.
