Armory Center for the Arts is pleased to present Fantastic Scenarios, a group exhibition of work by undergraduate students in the Department of Entertainment Design at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA. Fantastic Scenarios, organized by Entertainment Design Chair Tim Flattery, will be on display from February 12 – May 13, 2012 in the Armory’s Community Room Gallery. A public opening reception will take place on Saturday, February 11 from 7-9pm in conjunction with Armory’s opening of simultaneous solo exhibitions by Richard Jackson, Jocelyn Foye, Nicolas Grider, and Dawn Kasper. Fantastic Scenarios, along with the exhibitions by Kasper, Grider, and Foye, coincide with the Armory’s lead exhibition, Richard Jackson’s Accidents in Abstract Painting, the Armory, creating an opportunity for visitors to reflect on the shared conceptual and/or formal considerations between and among the works.

 About Art Center’s Department of Entertainment Design

Designing new worlds, characters, and objects that have never before been seen requires great imagination as well as an understanding of how things are built — and how to communicate with the people who will build these new worlds. Art Center’s Entertainment Design curriculum helps students develop the skills and creative focus required of concept designers in the entertainment industry. 

The department is relatively new, but Art Center alumni are already leaders in the fields of animation, video games, film, and television. Many work in the nearby hubs of those industries, bringing their expertise into the classroom as faculty and visiting lecturers. During the first four terms, students receive a rigorous education in drawing, rendering, model building and sculpting, as well as an introduction to 3D digital tools. The program concludes with a senior project focused on an area of particular artistic and professional interest. 

In years past, students seeking a career in entertainment design took a combination of illustration and industrial design classes to develop their skills and portfolio. Today, Art Center’s Entertainment Design program incorporates and expands upon the strengths of both disciplines. Students in the program have the opportunity to collaborate with peers from other College departments through Transdisciplinary Studios and Designmatters projects, where they can apply skills for commercial and nonprofit causes. 

Fantastic Scenarios is on view in the Community Room at the Armory at 145 North Raymond Avenue, Pasadena. Gallery hours are Tuesday – Sunday, noon-5pm.  $5 suggested donation. Armory members, students, and seniors are free.
