In her exhibition Projected Paintings, Sarah Kate Wilson actively engages the viewer’s perception of a painting by way of an overhead projector. Viewers are invited to create their own “paintings” by selecting and placing assorted laminated pouches on the glass plate surface of the projector. A viewer’s action of layering of transparent and opaque material take up residence on the wall as both colored light and shadow are projected; they remain in place until the next viewer interacts with the work to create a new projected image. Therefore, the result is a series of works in flux, existing as impressions that dissipate and perpetually alter during the course of the exhibition.

About This Series
Expanding on an expansive subject is a group exhibition that explores the expanded field of painting through nine artists’ investigations into painting’s range and potential as a cross-disciplinary medium. The exhibition presents a unique model, a group exhibition displayed as individual solo projects that unfold (or expand) over the course of time, offering the possibility of an exhibition as a temporal experience. Since May 2014, Expanding on an expansive subject has featured six-week projects by Margie Livingston, Analia Saban, John Burtle, Liat Yossifor, John Knuth, Kendell Carter, Kate Gilmore and continues through November 2015 with Sarah Kate Wilson and Constance Mallinson. While each artist’s approach to the discursive nature of painting is unique, the exhibition as a whole asks how painting today is distinct from its art historical predecessors.

Expanding on an expansive subject curator Sinéad Finnerty-Pyne recently participated in a symposium at The Tetley in the UK on July 4th, presented in conjunction with the center's exhibition Painting in Time, co-curated by Sarah Kate Wilson.

The Armory's Pasadena Art Alliance Gallery is open Tuesdays through Sundays from 12–5pm. Admission is free, donations are appreciated.
